The Tribe

The Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma is located in Wyandotte, Oklahoma. The Tribe is governed by the Chief (Executive Branch) and the Business Committee (Legislative Branch). The Business Committee is also responsible for overseeing all business operations of the Tribe.

The Tribe has approximately 3,800 enrolled tribal members throughout the country with large populations around Wyandotte, Oklahoma; Portland, Oregon; and Waco, Texas. During the great depression, some families moved to the west coast in search of work and opportunities.

The Tribe is historically from the Ohio River Valley. With the signing of the Treaty of Fort Meigs, the Shawnees were moved to reservations. The Indian Removal Act was passed in 1830. In 1831, the Lewistown Reservation Shawnee were forcibly removed from Ohio to northeast Oklahoma becoming the Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma. In the 1870s tribal membership dropped to just 69 people.

The Tribe today operates Indigo Sky Casino & Resort, Outpost Casino, Shawnee Skies Training Center & Shooting Complex, and Eastern Shawnee Printshop. The Tribe is also a majority shareholder in People’s Bank of Seneca and co-owns Bearskin Healthcare & Wellness Center.
