Tribal communities across the nation are set to receive much-needed support and improved access to high-speed internet through a new native-owned and woman-owned partnership designed to overcome long-standing connectivity challenges. Reagan Smith and Eastern Shawnee Professional Services (ESPS) have partnered to boost internet access for Tribal communities as many continue to experience significant barriers in accessing reliable broadband. According to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), nearly 28% of Tribal land residents lack high-speed internet compared to 1.5% of urban residents.
This digital divide limits access to essential services like telehealth, remote education and e-commerce, making it harder for Tribal nations to thrive in an increasingly connected world and prevents remote work opportunities. Tribes have an unprecedented opportunity to overcome the technology gap by deploying necessary infrastructure and technology to provide high-speed internet access in underserved areas. However, navigating the long-standing land use issues and limited access to digital maps as well as grant compliance, environmental compliance has created challenges and delays.
Reagan Smith and ESPS are helping Tribes protect the past and plan for the future, by providing complete project management, engineering and design service, grant and environmental compliance, cultural resources surveys, mapping, right of way and business site lease acquisition. From the planning stage through to installation, Reagan Smith and ESPS team approach will provide Tribes the partnership and support needed for project success.
“Internet access is essential for the growth and sustainability of Tribal communities,” ESPS COO Judy Reagan said. “By partnering with Reagan Smith, we can quickly and effectively bring broadband to more Tribal nations, while honoring their cultural and regulatory needs. This connection will provide access to critical support and resources, which are vital for long-term community growth. The Eastern Shawnee Companies are 100% tribally owned by the Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma. Contracting with tribally owned businesses brings significant benefits to clients, including saving time and money during the acquisition process.”
Broadband infrastructure projects are often complex and time-consuming. Reagan Smith’s expertise in mapping, engineering and design, grant and environmental compliance ensures that these initiatives adhere to state and cultural standards while prioritizing Tribal goals. ESPS, tribally owned by the Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma, has federal contracting capabilities that enhance and streamline project timelines. These combined efficiencies aim to address the internet connectivity challenges faced by many Tribal communities and promote sustainable development.
“We’re excited to partner with ESPS on these vital infrastructure projects. Tribes are often at a loss as to where to seek reliable experienced guidance that will protect cultural and natural resources, focus on Tribal goals and priorities, inform them of all available technology, streamline compliance, and provide consistent and continuous project management through to the completion of the project.” Reagan Smith Tribal Project Specialist Lee Vasquez Ilaoa said. “Together, we have created a powerful team to support Tribal broadband initiatives fostering opportunities for education, healthcare and economic growth, all while respecting the environment and cultural heritage of Tribal communities.”
